- Measurement requests funded by public research grants such as the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) are regarded as academic research.
- If a researcher affiliated with the University of Tokyo participates in the research project, requests from outside the university will also be treated as on-campus shared-use.
- Measurements funded by sources other than public research grants fall under the category of the shared-use programme.
1.Measurement fees
| Service | Unit Price (tax included) |
|---|---|
| Chemical Processing (ABA treatment, collagen extraction, and, more) | ¥16,000 |
| AMS Target Preparation (including C/N ratio measurement) | ¥12,000 |
| AMS Dating | ¥12,000 |
| Micro-sample AMS Dating | ¥13,000 |
| IRMS Measurement (Carbon and, Nitrogen Stable Isotope Ratios) | ¥5,000 |
Examples of Measurement Cost Calculation
- When chemical processing through to radiocarbon dating is carried out: ¥40,000
- When chemical processing through to radiocarbon dating is carried out and, stable isotope ratio measurement is added: ¥45,000
- When chemical processing is completed but measurement cannot be performed: ¥16,000
- When AMS target preparation is completed but AMS measurement cannot be performed: ¥28,000
- No charge will be made if measurement results cannot be obtained due to an error on the part of the laboratory.
2.Procedure for measurement requests
- If you are considering requesting a measurement, please contact the laboratory by email.
- Telephone enquiries may be delayed if the person in charge is unavailable.
- Depending on the submitted materials, we may ask for details about the purpose of the analysis and, the background of your research.
- Once your request has been approved, please complete and, submit the Confirmation Form for Commissioned Radiocarbon Dating. In addition, external applicants are also requested to submit the Confirmation Form for Joint Research with the Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory.
- As a rule, analysis and, reporting will be completed within four months from the date of acceptance.
- If unforeseen circumstances cause a delay in reporting, you will be notified promptly.
3.Important notes
- The laboratory receives financial support from the University of Tokyo and, is designated as a facility primarily intended for research conducted under the direction of university faculty members. For external use, acceptance of measurement requests is subject to approval by the Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory Committee, after which the laboratory will undertake the commissioned measurements. Applications are accepted at any time, so please contact us by email.
- Measurement data belong to the applicants of the on-campus shared-use programme, but when publishing the data, please clearly state that the radiocarbon dating was carried out with the cooperation of the University of Tokyo and, the Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory.
- Materials analysed will be retained in the laboratory for a certain period (one year) in case remeasurement is required. If you need your materials to be returned, please contact us in advance.
